Yamagata City Wild Plant Garden (山形市野草園)

About this spot

This botanical garden lies in the hills on the eastern side of Yamagata City, at the foot of Mt. Zao, and focuses on the wild mountain plants of the Tohoku region. Groves, ponds and boardwalks link the grounds together, so simply walking through it feels like being inside a forest. The flowers in bloom change with the seasons; in summer, hydrangeas and highland wildflowers are the highlight. Because the elevation is higher than the city center, the morning air is crisp, which is a relief even on hot days. You can also hear insects and frogs, so children find something to be curious about in every direction.

Tips

The paths include some ups and downs, and there are stretches where a baby carrier moves more easily than a stroller. Mosquitoes are around in summer, so bring insect repellent. Check the opening season, opening hours and admission fee in advance in the official information.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 20 minutes. The morning, before the temperature climbs, is by far the most comfortable time.
