The free water play area set up in Ninomaru Plaza in Tsuruoka Park (鶴岡公園), on the approach-path side, is the Tsuruoka Park Ninomaru Plaza water play area (floor fountain). It runs from Friday 3 July 2026 to Sunday 30 August 2026, from 9:00 to 18:00. The 5.4 m by 4.5 m floor fountain is motion-sensor operated: water shoots up as people come near and stops after about 30 seconds once no one is there. It is ringed by a 90 cm wide artificial-turf mat, and to prevent injuries children may play with sandals on, so even small children can run without worrying about their feet. With a simple changing room, benches and the arbour in Ninomaru Plaza, there is no shortage of places to change or rest. The plaza is surrounded by the trees of the old castle site, so even at the height of summer you can retreat into the shade, which is this spot's great strength.

Tips

From 13 to 16 August the hours are extended to 21:00. The hours are also extended when an event is held at Ninomaru Plaza, so check in advance on days you want to play in the evening. It is not a pool, so do not bring large play equipment such as rubber rings, and be mindful of others when running about. The simple changing room is available for changing. Children not yet out of nappies should wear swim nappies.

Best time to visit

About 3 hours 20 minutes. The afternoon, when the sunlight softens, is recommended, leaving plenty of time before the 18:00 close
