Akasakadai Comprehensive Park (Dragon Park)
About this spot
Akasakadai Comprehensive Park, affectionately known as Dragon Park, sits on the heights of Kai City, and its symbol is the 33 m observation tower. Climb the stairs to the top and the Kofu Basin (甲府盆地) spreads out all around, with Mt. Fuji (富士山) and the ridgeline of the Southern Alps visible in good weather. Reaching the top is a small challenge for children, and the sense of achievement on arrival is something special. Around the tower spread a 25,000 square metre lawn and play equipment including a slide shaped like Mt. Fuji, so you can move straight into playing. There is also a forest corridor and an 850 m rubber-chip-paved loop path, making the grounds pleasant just to walk around.
Tips
Both the park and the observation tower are free. The tower is reached by stairs, so leave the pushchair at the bottom. Vending machines in the park also sell disposable nappies and baby wipes, which is reassuring with an infant along. The park is also known for its lovely night views at dusk.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. On days with clear air, Mt. Fuji stands out sharply
