Nezu Memorial Hall in Shotokuji, Yamanashi City, is a facility built by restoring and maintaining the birthplace of Nezu Kaichiro, the industrialist who nurtured many railway companies including Tobu Railway and was called the Railway King. A spacious Japanese garden, storehouses and tatami rooms remain, conveying how people lived from the Meiji into the Taisho era. Nezu also put his energy into education, donating pianos to schools in his home region, and knowing his footsteps makes him feel closer to children too. Time spent gazing at the garden from a tatami room has a stillness fitting for the start of the day. The Fruit Park is about 15 minutes away by car, so the two connect comfortably.
Tips
Admission is around 300 yen for adults, and elementary and junior high school students are free or discounted (please check the facility information for current prices and opening days). You take off your shoes to go inside, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off are handy. There is a parking lot.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 10 minutes. The quiet period right after opening makes for a pleasant visit.
