Kai Kokubunji Temple Ruins (甲斐国分寺跡)
About this spot
Located in Ichinomiya-cho, Fuefuki City, the Kai Kokubunji Temple Ruins (甲斐国分寺跡) mark the site of one of the provincial temples built in each province during the Nara period, and it is designated a National Historic Site. Large foundation stones remain where the main hall and pagoda once stood, and their arrangement lets you imagine the scale of the buildings of that time. Because it is a wide grassy field, children enjoy simply hopping from one foundation stone to the next. There are no grand buildings here, but knowing that a great temple once stood on this spot changes the way the scenery looks. Combined with the Jomon exhibits seen in the morning, it gives a sense of the layers of time that have piled up in this basin.
