About this spot

The Ojirogawa River, which flows down from Mt. Kaikomagatake (甲斐駒ヶ岳), is a clear mountain stream ranked among Japan's Top 100 Waters. Walking about 20 minutes along the trail from the parking lot brings you to Sengabuchi (千ヶ淵), the first highlight. Surrounded by rocks, the pool shimmers blue-green depending on the angle of the light, with a clarity that outdoes any photograph. The gorge is shaded by trees and stays cool, carrying an atmosphere completely different from town even in the height of summer. Seeing a natural river here makes for an interesting experience, letting you appreciate the contrast with the artificial water-play plaza you'll enjoy in the afternoon.

Tips

Viewing is free. The trail has rocky sections and uneven steps, so wear sturdy footwear rather than sandals. Beyond Sengabuchi the trail becomes a proper mountain hiking path, so if you have small children plan to turn back at Sengabuchi. During high water or after rain, it's safer to stay out of the water. Parts of the gorge have fast currents, and it is not a swimming spot.
