Ota-juku Nakasendo Hall

About this spot

This facility is the base for exploring Ota-juku (太田宿), one of the post towns that flourished along the Nakasendo (中山道) highway. With its ferry crossing on the Kiso River (木曽川), Ota-juku was known to travelers as a difficult point on the road. The hall has exhibits on the history of the post town, and walking it together with the neighboring old townhouses and the site of the honjin gives you a strong sense of the old highway atmosphere. There are places to eat and rest inside, so you can have lunch here. Step out onto the Kiso River embankment and the breeze off the water brings a little relief from the heat.
