This is the free water play area in Akahogi Park in Takayama City, the Akahogi Park Water Play Area. In 2026 it is open from Friday, May 1 to Sunday, July 12, coming into its own in the season from early summer to just before the end of the rainy season. It is a waterside space created by making a former toddlers' pool shallower, and its greatest feature is that no swimsuit is required. Since you can dip your feet in everyday clothes, it helps that you do not have to make a big production of packing a change of clothes. Toys such as water pistols may be brought in and used freely, so taking favorite gear from home widens the range of play. Early summer in Hida is easy to spend outdoors, with dry air even when the sun is out, and it is just the right season in which getting wet does not chill the body too much.

The season runs only until Sunday, July 12. From Saturday, July 18 to Sunday, September 6 the adjoining Takayama Municipal Pool (paid) is open, so if you visit during the summer holidays, switch your plan to using that instead. No swimsuit is needed, but always prepare clothes you do not mind getting wet and a change of clothes. Water sandals to protect little feet are reassuring. Please check the opening hours in the city's information. There are days in May and June when the water feels cold, so bringing an extra layer and plenty of towels makes it more comfortable.

Best time to visit

From 13:30 to 16:00 is a good guide. After 15:00, when the sunshine softens, the body is less likely to chill once you get out of the water
