Harayama Citizens Park Waterside (shallow stream and stepped cascade)

This is the free water play spot in Harayama Citizens Park in Takayama City, the Harayama Citizens Park Waterside with its shallow stream and stepped cascade. It is made up of a wide, gently flowing shallow stream and a stepped cascade where the water falls in tiers, and since there are no deep spots, even small children can play while walking on their own two feet. The stepped cascade is fun for the sound and feel of the falling water, so children who are wary of water can get used to it little by little, starting by holding a hand under the flow. The wide shallows are an ideal playground for children who like to run around, and the cheers of splashing water never stop. A large play structure and a lawn plaza are right beside it, so you can move back and forth: the play equipment when tired of the water, the lawn for a rest when worn out. Up in the highlands of Hida the air is dry even in midsummer, so how comfortable you feel after water play is another gift of this land.

The 2026 operating period for the water play area has not been announced. Be sure to check the Takayama City information before you set out. The park itself is open all day, but there are days when the water is not running. Be sure to bring water sandals or water shoes so no one cuts a foot on the stones. Do not count on changing rooms; putting swimsuits on under clothes before you leave makes things smooth. Being in the mountains, it turns cool suddenly in the evening. Bringing extra jackets and towels is reassuring. Shade is limited, so do not forget a picnic sheet, hats and plenty of drinks.

Best time to visit

A rough guide is 14:45 to 17:00. After 16:00, as the sun drops, the light softens and the breeze off the mountains feels pleasant
