Makiba no Yakata

About this spot

Makiba no Yakata is a hands-on visitor facility of the Okayama Prefectural Livestock Research Institute, with pastoral scenery spread over roughly 5 hectares. The grounds include a lavender garden and a herb garden, which in season greet visitors with purple fields and fragrance. At the animal square you can see cattle, sheep and other animals up close, and what makes it special is the calm atmosphere unique to a research facility as you spend time with the animals. There is also an athletic playground and a day-camp site, making it a good place to move your body before the water play. Admission is free, so you can wander wherever you like.

久米郡美咲町の「まきばの館流れる小川」は、高台から湧いた水が園内を流れ下るコンクリート舗装の浅い小川で、滝とあわせて水遊びが楽しめます。プールのように区切られた水面ではなく上流から下流へたどれる「流れ」なので、子どもは水の道を歩く探検気分になり、同じ場所にとどまらず遊び続けられます。舗装されていて底が見えるので、川遊びのように足を取られる不安が少ないのも家族連れにはうれしいところ。約5haの敷地にはラベンダー園やハーブ園、アスレチック広場、動物広場、デイキャンプ場があり、水に飽きたらすぐに別の遊びへ移れます。入園は無料で、気軽に立ち寄れるのがこの施設のよさです。

2026年の開設期間は未発表です。例年は夏季の水遊びとなるため、出発前に施設の案内で当日水が流れているかを確認してください。舗装面は濡れるとすべりやすいので、脱げにくいサンダルかマリンシューズを履かせ、走らないよう声をかけましょう。湧き水は冷たいので、小さな子は体が冷えすぎないようこまめに上がって休憩をとってください。日陰は木立に限られるため、レジャーシートやポップアップテントがあると休憩が楽になります。着替えとタオル、濡れた服を入れるビニール袋は人数分そろえておくと帰りが楽です。

Tips

Follow the on-site guidance for the rules on interacting with animals and whether feeding is allowed. Always wash your hands after touching animals. The best time for lavender varies by season, so checking the bloom status beforehand helps you meet the view you hoped for. Some stretches of the grounds have little shade, so walk with a hat and drinks. In flower fields where bees are flying, quietly moving away rather than swatting at them is the safe choice.
