Makiba no Yakata Flowing Stream
About this spot
The Makiba no Yakata Flowing Stream in Misaki Town, Kume District, is a shallow concrete-paved stream where spring water from the hilltop runs down through the grounds, and together with the waterfall it makes for enjoyable water play. Rather than a pool-like enclosed basin, it is a flow you can follow from upstream to downstream, so children feel like explorers walking a path of water and keep playing instead of staying in one spot. Because it is paved and the bottom is visible, there is less worry about losing your footing than in a natural river, which families appreciate. The roughly 5-hectare grounds hold a lavender garden, a herb garden, an athletic playground, an animal square and a day-camp site, so when the water loses its appeal you can move straight to something else. Admission is free, and being able to drop in casually is one of this facility's strengths.

Tips
The 2026 operating period has not been announced. Water play is normally offered in summer, so check with the facility before you set out to confirm the water is running that day. Paved surfaces get slippery when wet, so have children wear sandals that will not slip off or marine shoes, and remind them not to run. The spring water is cold, so have small children get out and rest often so they do not get too chilled. Shade is limited to the trees, so a picnic sheet or pop-up tent makes breaks much easier. Bringing a change of clothes, towels and a plastic bag for wet clothing for each person makes the trip home simpler.
Best time to visit
