This large indoor play area is the heart of Iwate Kodomo no Mori (Iwate Prefectural Children's Center). The high-ceilinged space is packed with structures for whole-body play, and the real strength of the facility is that children can move freely on rainy days and cold days alike. There is also a corner for younger children, so siblings with a wide age gap each find their own place. Starting here to get moving makes a good warm-up for the water play to come. Admission is free, so you can play as long as you like without watching the clock. Toilets and rest areas are available inside as well.

二戸郡一戸町の奥中山にある岩手県立児童館 いわて子どもの森の屋外エリアにあるのが「岩手県立児童館 いわて子どもの森 みずの広場」です。水遊びができるジャブジャブ池に加えて、上から水が落ちてくる滝のカーテン、水面に浮かぶいかだまでそろっていて、ただ水に入るだけでは終わらない遊びの幅があります。滝のカーテンは思いきりくぐって全身びしょ濡れになるのが子どもの定番で、いかだは自分で動かす楽しさが味わえます。入館は無料(一部の有料遊具・キャンプ場利用料を除く)なので、家族で気軽に一日過ごせるのもうれしいところ。高原の澄んだ空気の中で遊ぶ水辺は、県北ならではの気持ちよさです。

開館時間は9時から17時までで、休館日は火曜日(火曜が祝日の場合は翌日)です。みずの広場の開設期間は未発表で、例年は夏休み期間に開かれています。出発前に施設の最新のお知らせで開設状況を必ず確認してください。閉館17時に向けて着替えと片づけの時間が必要なので、16時半には水からあがるのが安心です。池の底やいかだで足を滑らせないよう、マリンシューズなど足を守れる履物を用意しましょう。おむつが取れていない子の入水可否は現地の掲示に従ってください。高原は日が傾くと一気に涼しくなるため、羽織るものとしっかりしたタオルを忘れずに。ゴミは各自持ち帰りです。
Tips
Opening hours are 9:00 to 17:00, and the closed day is Tuesday (the following day when Tuesday is a public holiday), so take care not to plan this for a Tuesday. Admission is free, but some play equipment costs extra. There are areas where shoes come off, so easy on-and-off shoes and a spare pair of socks are handy. It gets busy during the summer holidays, so claim a spot for your bags early. Rather than leaving the water-play gear in the car, gather it together before moving to Mizu no Hiroba for a smoother transition.
