Mihara Castle Ruins (三原城跡)

About this spot

This is an unusual castle site, one of the few in Japan where a station platform runs right over the ruins. It was built by the Sengoku-period warlord Kobayakawa Takakage as a base for his Seto Inland Sea naval forces, and because it appeared to float on the sea at high tide it came to be called the floating castle. The stone walls and moat of the former keep remain today, so the air of history is there the moment you step out of the ticket gates. Climb the stone walls and you can look down on the water of the moat and the townscape, which makes for a small adventure for children. Learning how the town of Mihara came to be before heading to the sea changes how the rest of the day's scenery looks.

三原市すなみ海浜公園水遊び場(噴水)は、2026年は7月11日(土)から8月23日(日)まで、9:00〜17:00に開設されます。水深は約10cmと浅く、噴水が出るので、水に慣れていない小さな子でも自分のペースで遊べます。隣には水深50cmと70cmの幼児プールが同時に開設され、小さな滑り台もついているため、きょうだいで年齢に合わせた遊び方を選べるのがうれしいところ。すなみ海浜公園は砂浜までスロープを設けたバリアフリー公園なので、ベビーカーでの移動もしやすい造りです。海のすぐそばという立地で、潮風を感じながら水遊びできるのがこの場所ならではの魅力。夕方まで開いているので、日差しがやわらぐ時間まで長く過ごせます。

Tips

料金については公式の案内で確認してください。開設は7月11日(土)〜8月23日(日)の9:00〜17:00です。隣の幼児プールは水深50cm・70cmと水遊び場より深いので、必ず保護者が付き添ってください。着替えの設備については事前に三原市の案内で確認しておくと安心です。海辺で日差しが強いため、日焼け止めはこまめに塗り直しを。濡れた床は滑りやすいので、走らないよう声をかけましょう。

Tips

There is a passage leading straight from the Mihara Station ticket gates up to the former keep site. Follow the signs. There are stone steps, so with a stroller a stroll around the moat alone is plenty enjoyable. There is little shade, so do not forget a hat and drinks. Coin lockers are available in front of the station, so leaving large bags there lets you walk unencumbered.
