This exhibition facility inside Hiroshima City Forest Park is devoted to insects. The highlight is the large dome where live butterflies fly year-round. When one flutters right past, children and adults alike stop in their tracks. There are also plenty of specimens of insects from around the world and displays of live insects being reared, making it a great place to look for ideas for a summer holiday research project. Being indoors, it lets you escape the sun and spend the hot morning hours in comfort. Let it build up your curiosity about mountain wildlife before the water play begins.

ひろしま遊学の森広島市森林公園ジャブジャブ川は、緑と岩でつくられた浅い流れの水遊び場です。コンクリートで固めたプールとは違い、木立の中を流れる小川のような姿なので、水に入るだけで山の中を探検している気分になれます。水は浅く流れもおだやかで、小さな子でも足をひたして遊べるのが安心なところ。近くに木陰とテーブル・イスがあり、荷物を置いて交代で休みながら長く過ごせます。入園は無料で水遊びにもお金はかからないため、気軽に何度でも足を運べる夏の定番です。石の下をのぞけば小さな生きものが見つかることもあり、自由研究のきっかけにもなります。

2026年の開設期間は未発表です。出発前に公式サイトで開設状況を確認してください。雨の後など川の流量が多い場合は利用できません。前日までの天気も合わせてチェックしましょう。川底には石があるため、脱げにくいサンダルかマリンシューズが必須です。着替えの場所が限られるので、水着を服の下に着ていくとスムーズ。山あいで日が陰るのが早いので、夕方は体が冷える前に切り上げてください。

Tips

Admission is charged (check the official website for fees). Entry to the park itself is free. Insect-related events are sometimes held during the summer holidays, so looking up the schedule beforehand adds to the fun. Photography is allowed in some areas and prohibited in others, so follow the posted signs. There is a slope between the car park and the building, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
