This giant camphor tree in Kamo, Higashimiyoshi Town, is designated a National Special Natural Monument. Standing alone in the middle of the rice fields with its branches spreading widely in all directions, it is unmistakable even from a distance. Stand beneath it and look up, and the thickness of the trunk and the reach of the branches are overwhelming in a way photographs cannot convey. Telling children that this tree has spent long ages on this land changes the way they see it. The shade underneath is surprisingly cool, making it a fine turning point for a morning walk.
Tips
The surroundings are farmland, so take care where you park and where you walk. To protect the roots, stay on the designated paths. Early in the morning the light comes in at an angle and the shape of the tree shows beautifully.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. The morning, when the sunlight is soft, is also best for photographs
