Nankobo Temple (南光坊)

About this spot

Located in central Imabari, this is the 55th temple of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, known as the only one of the 88 whose name includes the character for a monks' lodging. Despite its downtown setting, the grounds are spacious, and the large main hall and mountain gate stand imposingly in the summer sunshine. The sight of white-clad pilgrims coming and going feels both familiar and special to children growing up in Shikoku. Visiting in the morning gives you a calm moment before the heat sets in. Setting aside time to quietly join your hands together before running around in the water is how this course is put together.

Tips

Do not run on the grounds; keep things quiet. Parking is limited, so on busy days using a nearby parking lot goes more smoothly. There is shade, but summer mornings are humid, so bringing a water bottle is a good idea.
