Sendohira Lock (船頭平閘門)

About this spot

Located in Tatsuta-cho, Aisai City, this facility lets boats travel between two great rivers, the Kiso River and the Nagara River. Because the two rivers are at different water levels, boats enter the lock, the water level is raised or lowered, and only then do they pass through. The brick structure, built in the Meiji era, is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and it is astonishing that it is still in active use. If you are lucky, you may catch a boat passing through and watch the water slowly rise and fall right before your eyes. The surroundings are laid out as Sendohira Riverside Park (船頭平河川公園), and walking in the river breeze is a pleasure in itself.

愛西市の「道の駅ふれあいの里HASUパークじゃぶじゃぶ池」は、2026年4月5日にグランドオープンした道の駅の中にある無料の水遊び場です。開設期間の公表はなく、道の駅の営業時間に準じて9:00〜17:00の利用となります。隣にはわんぱく広場と遊具広場があるので、水に飽きたら遊具、遊具に飽きたらまた水と、子どもが自分のペースで遊び続けられるのがこの場所の強み。24時間使えるトイレがあるのも家族連れには心強いところです。直売所と食事のできる場所が同じ敷地にあるため、飲み物やおやつをすぐに買い足せるのも便利。料金は無料なので、ドライブの途中に短時間だけ立ち寄る使い方もできます。

Tips

定休は木曜と年末年始です。開業したばかりのため整備中で利用できない日があり、出発前に公式サイトで当日の状況を確認してください。開設期間は公表されていないので、秋以降は稼働の有無をあわせて確認しましょう。17:00で道の駅の営業が終わるので、片付けと着替えの時間を逆算して16時半ごろには上がると落ち着いて帰れます。水遊び後は体をよく流し、木陰で休憩をはさみながら遊ぶと熱中症を防げます。おむつが取れていない子には水遊び用おむつを用意してください。

Tips

Boats do not pass on a fixed schedule, so whether you catch one is a matter of luck. Some spots along the water have no railings, so hold small children's hands as you walk. There is little to block the sun, so do not forget a hat and drinks. You can really feel the breadth of the three Kiso rivers (木曽三川), so checking the location on a map beforehand deepens your understanding.
