Handa Canal (半田運河)

About this spot

A canal running through the center of Handa, known for the rows of storehouses with black board fences on both banks. This land prospered from brewing from the Edo period onward, and the canal was the logistical artery that carried sake and vinegar to Edo. The storehouses mirrored on the water make a picture, and simply walking here makes you want to take photos. Restaurants are scattered along the canal, so having lunch around here lets you savor the atmosphere of the town along with your meal. The distance is not long, so it is no burden even walking with small children.

Tips

Some parts of the canal have low railings, so hold small children by the hand as you walk. There is little shade, so a hat and drinks are essential. Restaurant closing days differ from shop to shop, so check in advance if you have somewhere particular in mind. Chapuchapu Pond is open only until 3:00 p.m., so it is best not to let lunch drag on.
