Northern Culture Museum (北方文化博物館)

About this spot

Located in Somi, Konan Ward, Niigata City, this museum opens to the public the residence of the Ito family (伊藤家), the leading wealthy landowners of Echigo (越後), just as it was. From the great hall and kitchen of the main house to the storehouses and the stroll-style garden centered on a pond, the sheer wealth generated by rice growing in the Niigata Plain (新潟平野) remains in every corner of the buildings. The thickness of the pillars and beams and the number of rooms make a completely different impression when you stand there yourself than they do in photographs. The garden has a large wisteria trellis that casts green shade in summer. There are also unusual structures such as a triangular study, so children can walk around wondering why it was built in that shape.

よこごし公園流れ（せせらぎ水路）は、新潟市江南区の地区公園にある無料の水遊びスポットです。開設期間は未発表で、例年は夏季に流れています。浅い水路なので小さな子どもでも歩いて入れ、上流から下流へたどるだけでも立派な遊びになります。園内は49,274平方メートルと広く、幼児用遊具のある遊び場広場、コンビネーション遊具のある屋根付き広場、すべり台のある築山、多目的広場と、水以外の遊び場も充実しています。体が冷えたら屋根付き広場へ移って温まり、また水に戻るという行き来ができるのが、1日を過ごすうえでとてもありがたい構成です。園路と東屋も整っているので、大人はベンチで休みながら子どもを見守れます。

Tips

開設期間は未発表なので、出発前に新潟市の公式ページで当年の状況を必ず確認してください。天候や管理状況によって水が流れていない日があります。水路の底は滑りやすいので、脱げにくいサンダルやマリンシューズを履かせてください。更衣室があるとは限らないため、上から羽織れるタオルや簡易ポンチョがあると着替えに困りません。屋根付き広場と東屋が休憩場所になるので、暑い時間帯はこまめに日陰へ移動しましょう。

Tips

There are many steps inside the buildings and you take your shoes on and off repeatedly, so footwear that is easy to slip on and off is more comfortable. Mosquitoes are around in summer, so insect repellent is reassuring if you plan to walk the garden. For lunch you can either eat near the museum or spread out a packed lunch at Kameda Park (亀田公園), your next stop. Opening hours and closed days can change with the season, so check before you set out.
