Next stop: Pleasure boats lined up against a backdrop of towers, a remnant of the fishing-town daysAbout this spot
A shrine on high ground facing the Daiichi Keihin (第一京浜), counted among the Ten Shrines of Tokyo. The stone steps of the approach are steep enough to make you look up, but at the top the main hall awaits, and in the precinct stands the Fuji mound known as Shinagawa Fuji (品川富士). A small rocky path built of stacked stones leads to the summit, giving children the feeling of a little mountain climb. From the top you can look out over the streets of Shinagawa and imagine where the Old Tokaido once ran. Kodomo no Mori Park is within walking distance.
Tips
Both the stone steps and the Fuji mound have large steps, so hold small children by the hand as you climb. Parts of the mound have exposed rock, so shoes that are easy to walk in are safer than sandals. Shade in the precinct is limited, so take a hat and drinks up with you. The hours the shrine office is staffed vary by day, so check in advance if you would like a goshuin seal.
Best time to visit
About 55 minutes. Climbing in the morning, before the sun gets strong, is recommended
