Tama River Gasu Bridge Green Space (多摩川ガス橋緑地)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This riverbank green space spreads out at the foot of Gasu Bridge (ガス橋) over the Tama River. Climbing up onto the levee opens up the view, letting you take in the flow of the Tama River and the townscape on the opposite bank at a glance. It has a sports ground and wide grassland, with an open feel that appeals thanks to having room to run around without bumping into people. The breeze crossing the river's surface is much cooler than in the city, making it a pleasant place to spread out a picnic sheet and eat a bento. It's within walking distance of Shimomaruko Park, so you can move straight on to the afternoon's water play.

Tips

There's little shade on the riverbank, so a hat and something to drink are essential. The river water isn't for playing in, so tell children not to go near the water's edge. Access may be restricted after high water or heavy rain. Taking your trash home with you is standard practice, so bring a bag, and it's reassuring to avoid going into the water right after eating, resting about 20-30 minutes before heading to change.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. The embankment, swept by the river breeze, feels cooler even at midday in midsummer.
