This classic memorial hall, built in the early Showa era, stands atop the hill in Tokyo Metropolitan Sakuragaoka Park (都立桜ヶ丘公園). Its distinctive exterior lined with columns stands out amid the forest, and inside you can view materials and special exhibits related to Tama's history. The walk to the building goes up the park's slopes and stairs, giving children a bit of a mountain-climbing feeling along the way. From the hilltop you can look out over the green of the Tama hills, and in the morning a pleasant breeze passes through. It's a place where you can feel the very shape of the Tama landscape, quite different from an ordinary city view.
Tips
Check the facility's official website for opening days, hours, and admission fees before heading out. There are many slopes and stairs within the park, so if you're using a stroller you'll need to choose your route carefully. Some stretches have little shade, so bring a hat and something to drink for the climb.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. It's most comfortable to climb the slope in the morning before the temperature rises fully.
