About this spot

Standing partway up Mt. Asuwa (足羽山), this museum introduces the full range of Fukui's nature. Exhibits on Fukui's geological strata, fossils, plants, insects, and birds let parents and children learn together about how the land they live in came to be. From the rooftop observation deck and terrace, you can look out over the Fukui Plain (福井平野) and get a sense of the layout of the places you'll visit next. The museum is compact, so even small children can go around it before their attention wanders. Spend the morning in the cool indoors and save some energy for the water play in the afternoon.

Tips

Open from 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM (last admission 4:45 PM). Admission is 100 yen for high school students and older; free for junior high school students and younger, and for those 70 and older. Closed on Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday) and on the weekday after a public holiday, so check ahead if visiting on a Monday or right after a long weekend. Mt. Asuwa has continuous slopes, so if driving, aim for the parking lot near the top to reduce the amount of walking.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Mornings, before the temperature rises fully, are the most comfortable time to visit
