A free-admission exhibition facility adjacent to the Itazuke Ruins (板付遺跡) in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. The Itazuke Ruins are a nationally designated historic site where traces of some of the oldest wet-rice paddies in Japan were discovered, and at the Yayoi Hall you can see excavated pottery, stone tools, and models recreating life at the time. Outdoors, reconstructed pit dwellings and rice paddies have been maintained, letting children walk through a Yayoi-period landscape just like the ones in textbooks - a fresh experience for kids. The exhibition room is compact, so even small children can go around it before losing interest. Spend the morning indoors and exploring the shaded historic site, saving energy for the afternoon's water play.
Tips
The hall is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30), and admission is free. It is closed only during the New Year holidays, so you can drop by anytime during summer vacation. There is little shade around the outdoor ruins, so don't forget a hat and something to drink. It is about a 10-minute drive to Higashihirao Park (東平尾公園).
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. Mornings, before the sun gets strong, are the most comfortable time to visit.
