About this spot

This home has been relocated and restored on the grounds of the Tatebayashi City No. 2 Museum, within the Rekishi no Mori (Forest of History) adjacent to the site of the former Tatebayashi Castle's main keep. Tayama Katai, who spent his boyhood here, later became a Meiji-era author known for works such as The Quilt (Futon) and Country Teacher (Inaka Kyoshi). The earthen floor and tatami rooms remain as they were, letting you see with your own eyes, rather than in photographs, what life was like before electricity and running water. Having children search for what the old house didn't have keeps their interest going. Surrounded by forest, it's a quiet spot that's easy to walk through even in the heat of the afternoon.

Tips

Open from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:30), closed on Mondays. It's located on the grounds of the Tatebayashi City No. 2 Museum. Kondonuma Park is about a 10-minute drive away, so you can head straight to the water play after your visit.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes needed. Shaded by the surrounding forest, it's a comfortable spot even on a sun-drenched afternoon
