About this spot

Located on the same Godaisan Hill as the botanical garden, this is the 31st sacred site of the 88-temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. Climb the stone stairway wrapped in cedar trees, and a five-story pagoda built entirely of Japanese cypress comes into view, enveloped in a stillness hard to believe is so close to the city center. The temple has a garden designated a Place of Scenic Beauty and a treasure hall holding Buddhist statues from Tosa, making it a valuable spot to see Kochi's cultural heritage all in one place. Since it's within walking distance of the botanical garden, you can efficiently cover both Godaisan Hill spots in the morning. There are stone steps, so hold young children's hands and take it slowly.

Tips

Visiting the temple grounds is free; the scenic garden and treasure hall require a separate admission fee. The stone steps can be slippery after rain, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Since it's right next to the botanical garden, you can park once and walk between the two. As this is a place where Shikoku pilgrims come to worship, it's reassuring to agree with your kids beforehand to stay quiet on the grounds.
