Next stop: Play in the river at a natural-stone pool fed by the Ogi RiverAbout this spot
This is an old shrine in Ushihara-cho, Tosu City, where large trees surround the main hall, keeping the air cool even in summer. The stone steps leading up to the hall feel like a green tunnel, offering a quiet that's hard to believe is so close to the city center. A river flows alongside the grounds, and locals have long cherished this as a place to cool off in summer. Simply resting after paying your respects while listening to the sound of the water helps take the heat out of your body.
Tips
There are stone steps from the parking lot up to the main hall, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Bug spray is helpful, since insects are common at this time of year. Cooling off here before heading up the mountain road makes the cold water at Kawachi River Pool feel even more refreshing.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. A good spot to rest in the shade during the hot late-morning hours
