Next stop: Take in a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean from the hilltop observation deck and learn Onjuku's historyAbout this spot
A memorial museum standing near Onjuku Beach, dedicated to the children's song 'Tsuki no Sabaku' (Moon over the Desert). The song is said to have been inspired by poet Kato Masao from the dune scenery of Onjuku, and inside the museum you can trace the background through the works and materials of the time. On the sandy beach just outside stand statues of a prince and princess riding a camel, making it one of Onjuku's signature photo spots. Even children who don't know the song will likely remember the sight of the statues against the white sand and blue sea. Learning the story of Onjuku before heading to the pool adds depth to the day.
Tips
It's just a few minutes by car from Onjuku Town Waterpark. Check the official Onjuku Town information for opening hours and closed days. There's no shade on the beach where the statues stand, so bring a hat and something to drink and keep your visit short. Sandals are comfortable since sand easily gets into shoes.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. The soft morning light makes for beautiful photos of the statues.
