Katsushika Hachimangu Shrine, Guardian Shrine of Shimosa Province (下総国総鎮守 葛飾八幡宮)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing between JR Motoyawata Station and Keisei Yawata Station, this shrine has long been cherished as the guardian shrine of the old Shimosa Province. What catches the eye most within the grounds is the giant ginkgo tree known as the Senbon Icho (Thousand-Trunk Ginkgo) - its many trunks clustered together make for an impressive sight, and it's designated a national natural monument. Curiously, even though it sits in the heart of the city, the air cools noticeably the moment you step onto the approach. It's within walking distance of the pool venue, so you can stop by without moving your car. Looking up at the great tree is the kind of moment that stays in a child's memory.

Tips

Please pay your respects quietly and be considerate of other visitors. Parts of the grounds have gravel paths that can be difficult for strollers. Parking spaces are limited, so it's reassuring to check nearby parking lots as well. Having lunch at a restaurant near the station beforehand will make your afternoon easier.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. The shade is cool, making it comfortable to visit even when the sun is strong
