Sekinoo Potholes (関之尾の甌穴群)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Spreading out upstream from Sekinoo Falls, this is a rare landscape where the riverbed rock is carved with countless round holes. They formed over a long span of time as swirling water spun small stones that ground away at the rock, and the scale is said to be among the largest in the world -- it's designated a national Natural Monument. You can view it up close from the walking trail, so wondering aloud with your kids about how it formed turns the walk into a learning moment all on its own. The sound of water flowing through the trees is cool and refreshing, with a quiet power all its own, different from the waterfall.

Tips

It's connected to Sekinoo Falls by the walking trail, so visiting both together is the natural flow. The rocks become extremely slippery when wet, so avoid climbing down to the river and view it from the trail instead. Stay away when water levels are high. There's plenty of shade, but also insects, so insect repellent helps.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. It's efficient to visit together with the falls in the morning.
