Ochiai Stone Pavement (落合の石畳)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A stretch of stone-paved road on the old Nakasendo Highway preserved in Ochiai, Nakatsugawa City. This section conveys the appearance of the Edo-period highway to this day, and being covered by trees, it stays cool even in midsummer. The full route is quite long, but even a short walk near the entrance lets you feel that travelers of the time walked over these very same stones. In contrast to the bustle of Magome-juku, it's quiet, and the time spent hearing only cicadas and your own footsteps is a valuable experience. It's just the right spot for a short, cool walk in the shade of trees before heading into the pool.

Tips

The stone pavement can be slippery after rain or with morning dew, so watch your footing as you walk. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. The path narrows once you go past the maintained section, so don't push too far in — turning back near the entrance is the safer choice. Insect repellent helps keep things comfortable. Parking is limited, so follow the posted signs when parking.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. Under the trees, it feels cool even during the day.
