Tamashima Preserved Townscape District (Shinmachi)

Flow of the course

About this spot

An old townscape preserved around the Nakagai-cho area of Tamashima, Kurashiki City. This port town flourished as a port of call for kitamaebune trading ships from the Edo through Meiji periods, and merchant houses and storehouses from that era still line the streets today. It doesn't have the bustle of the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, but that means fewer crowds and a calmer stroll to take in the buildings. Telling children that ships once came all the way here to unload cargo can change how they see the street. It's just the right size for a short walk before the pool.

Tips

This is a residential area where people still live, so walk quietly and avoid entering private property. There's little shade during summer daytime hours, so bring a hat and water. Parking is limited, so check nearby parking lots before heading over. Watch your footing around the stone pavement and drainage channels.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Photos are easier to take when there are fewer people around.
