Ondo-no-Seto Park (音戸の瀬戸公園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This hilltop park overlooks Ondo-no-Seto, the narrow strait separating Honshu from Kurahashi Island. Right in front of it, the vermillion Ondo Bridge arcs across in a spiral shape, and cargo ships and fishing boats pass beneath it one after another. Because the strait is so narrow, watching large ships pass right in front of you is especially thrilling. From the observation deck you can also take in the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. According to legend, this area was carved open in a single day by Taira no Kiyomori, and historic sites such as the Kiyomori Mound are scattered around. It is known as a famous spot for azaleas in spring, but in summer the sea breeze makes it a pleasant place to spend time.

Tips

There are slopes and stairs on the way to the observation deck, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking is available. Some areas have no fencing, so keep an eye on small children at all times. Shade is limited, so do not forget a hat and something to drink.

Best time to visit

Takes about 40 minutes. If you catch a time when many ships are passing through, it is endlessly fascinating to watch.
