An ancient temple in Moriyama Ward counted among the Four Kannon Temples of Owari that guard Nagoya Castle. It stands on a hilltop overlooking the Shonai River, and the temple grounds offer views of the river and the townscape on the opposite bank. Passing through the Nio Gate leads to an approach lined with trees, and the scene of the pagoda and main hall standing quietly is calm enough that you would hardly believe you are near the city center. The temple also features castle-like stone walls, suggesting it once served as a fortress as well. The grounds are not too large, so it is easy to visit even with children in a short time.
Tips
Worship is free, but viewing the treasure hall and similar facilities may require a separate fee and be limited to certain open days. There are stone steps, so strollers need to be left at the bottom. There are many mosquitoes in summer, so bring insect repellent.
Best time to visit
About 50 minutes. Even before noon, the breeze under the trees makes it feel comfortable.
