Tokamachi Satoyama Science Museum: Echigo-Matsunoyama 'School in the Forest' Kyororo (十日町市立里山科学館 越後松之山「森の学校」キョロロ)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This nature science museum stands amid the satoyama countryside of Matsunoyama. Its long, narrow building, clad in rusted steel plates, was designed to withstand heavy snowfall and is also known as a work of art from the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. Inside, extensive exhibits cover the insects, plants, and animals of the satoyama, with real specimens and living displays that children find captivating. Climbing the tall tower offers a view over the surrounding beech forest. The museum's appeal lies in helping you experience firsthand what kind of environment this heavy-snowfall region is. The air-conditioned interior is also a good place to spend the hot late morning.

Tips

Check the facility's information for opening days, hours, and admission fees. Climbing the tower involves a continuous flight of stairs, so small children may need to be carried. There is a rest area inside the building—make use of it to stay hydrated.
