Seta no Karahashi Bridge (瀬田唐橋)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This bridge spans the Seta River and has long been counted among Japan's Three Great Bridges. It has stood at a strategic point on the route to Kyoto since ancient times and appears repeatedly on the stage of history - so much so that people once said 'whoever controls Karahashi controls the realm.' Its railing, lined with ornamental finials, has an understated elegance, and the Seta River's leisurely flow as seen from the bridge makes it easy to sense that this is the only river flowing out of Lake Biwa. Crossing the bridge takes only about 10 minutes, but it leaves a lasting sense of having stood at this historic spot. Karahashi Park, home to the pool, is right at the foot of the bridge, so you can move straight into the afternoon.

Tips

The bridge is an everyday road with car traffic, so walk on the sidewalk and hold your child's hand while crossing. There is no shade, so bring a hat and something to drink. Parking nearby is limited, so using the park's parking lot is the practical choice. Having lunch in this area makes the afternoon go smoothly.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes - an easy length to time with the start of the afternoon pool session.
