Aqua Biwa Water Blessing Museum (水のめぐみ館 アクア琵琶)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This exhibition facility stands at the foot of the Seta River Weir, built on the Seta River, the only river flowing out of Lake Biwa. Models and videos clearly explain how the lake's water is regulated and how it supports life downstream in Kyoto and Osaka. Outside, there's a device that lets you experience Japan's heaviest recorded rainfall, and actually being drenched by the intense downpour leaves a strong impression on kids. Admission is free, and the facility is a comfortable size to tour in a short time. Seeing the Seta River flowing right in front of you and the scale of the weir also gives you a natural opening to talk with your kids about where the pool water in the afternoon comes from.

Tips

The museum has set closing days, so check opening days before visiting. If you try the rain-experience device, you'll get wet, so prepare a towel and a change of clothes. Parking is free. The pool is about a 10-minute drive away.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Spend the time indoors before midday, when the sunlight gets strong.
