About this spot

This wooden playhouse, built in 1910 (Meiji 43), is designated a National Important Cultural Property. The seating, which strongly retains the style of Edo-period kabuki, is arranged in box seats (masuseki) with a hanamichi walkway, and the revolving stage and naraku (the mechanism beneath the stage floor) still remain. It's one of the few historic playhouses still in active use nationwide, and performances of the lantern dance are sometimes held here during the Yamaga Lantern Festival period. Surrounded by the scent of wood and a stately atmosphere, take a moment to imagine the entertainment culture of the Meiji era. It's also within easy walking distance of Omiya Shrine (大宮神社).

Tips

Located in the center of Yamaga's town, a few minutes' walk from Omiya Shrine (大宮神社). Admission is around 400 yen for adults (subject to change, so check the official website in advance). Some areas inside allow photography while others don't, so please follow the posted guidance. During the Lantern Festival period, performances or special exhibits may be added, offering more to see than usual. After your visit, walk back to the Sakura-yu (さくら湯) area to stake out your spot for the evening.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Visiting before evening and then moving straight to the nearby venue area makes for a smooth flow
