KAM Nomi City Kutani Ware Art Museum (KAM能美市九谷焼美術館)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Nomi City is known as a major production area for Kutani ware, and this museum shares its history and beauty. Kutani ware is characterized by the vivid coloring known as Kutani gosai (九谷五彩) — red, green, yellow, purple, and deep blue — with designs painted across the entire surface of each piece, giving an impression closer to painting than pottery. The exhibits are arranged so you can see how styles changed over different eras, and simply following the shifts in color is enjoyable on its own. Asking kids which color they think is prettiest naturally gets them to look more closely at the works. The air-conditioned interior is also a good place to spend the hottest part of the late morning.

Tips

Check the facility's own information for closed days and admission fees. This is a place for quiet appreciation, so if you're with small children, plan to keep your visit to a manageable length. Several other Kutani-ware-related facilities are located nearby, so you can extend your visit if you're interested.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. A cool way to spend the hottest part of the late morning.
