Sao-zaki Park, Site of Sao-zaki Battery (棹崎公園(棹崎砲台跡))

Flow of the course

About this spot

A park developed on a cape at Tsushima's northwestern tip, Japan's westernmost-northern point. Standing at the observation deck, the Genkai Sea and the Tsushima Strait spread out before you, with an unbroken horizon stretching on. On clear days, you may even see the outline of mountains in Korea across the sea, a moment that makes you truly feel this is a border island. There's also a grassy plaza where children can run around. It's adjacent to the Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center, so visiting both together is a natural flow. Strong sea breezes blow through, making it comfortable to spend time here even in midsummer.

Tips

It's about a 20-minute drive from Kamiagata General Sports Park. Winds can be very strong on the cape, so watch that hats don't blow away. There are slopes and stairs up to the observation deck, so wear comfortable walking shoes. There are few shops, so bring your own drinks. Make sure to leave time for lunch before the pool as well.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. On clear mornings you can see far across the horizon.
