Temple 81, Shiromine-ji (白峯寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This Shikoku pilgrimage temple sits deep in the mountains of Goshikidai, its quiet grounds surrounded by deep woods leaving a strong impression. It's also known for holding the mausoleum of Emperor Sutoku, who was exiled to this land of Sanuki after his defeat in the Hogen Rebellion, giving the place a sense of historical weight. The approach continues along moss-covered stone steps, and even in midsummer the trees block the sunlight, keeping cool air flowing through. Passing pilgrims dressed in white robes is a sight unique to Shikoku. The history may be a little difficult for children, but the atmosphere of a quiet mountain temple conveys something words can't. Put your hands together before heading to the pool, and pray for a day free of water accidents.

Tips

The grounds have many stone steps, so a stroller isn't suitable. A baby carrier gives peace of mind for small children. The road up Goshikidai has continuous curves, so take early precautions if your child is prone to carsickness. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the main hall. There are many insects in summer, so insect repellent helps.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The grounds are quiet and pleasant to walk in the morning when there are fewer visitors.
