About this spot

This Shikoku pilgrimage temple sits deep in the mountains of Goshikidai, and its approach leaves a strong impression: after passing through the temple gate, it descends a stone stairway before climbing back up again. The stone paving of the approach is covered in moss, and trees on both sides cover the sky, keeping the air cool even at the height of summer. The temple carries the legend of the ushioni, a monster from local folklore, and a statue of it stands within the grounds — a presence that's a little scary and also fascinating as a story for children. Walking both this temple and Shiromine-ji, the two pilgrimage sites on Goshikidai, gives you a physical sense that this mountain has long been a place of faith. Spend the morning quietly and save some energy for the pool.

Tips

The approach has many stone steps, so a stroller isn't suitable. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The stone paving gets slippery after rain. There's a parking lot near the grounds, but it has limited spaces. Finish lunch early on the way and save the afternoon for the pool. Insect repellent helps.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The tree-covered approach stays cool for walking even in strong sunlight.
