Zao-do Hall (蔵王堂)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This temple, at the heart of Mount Yoshino, is registered as a World Heritage site as part of the 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' The main hall, Zao-do, is one of the largest wooden structures in Japan, and its sheer scale is powerful enough to make even children stop and look up in awe on their first visit. Souvenir shops and eateries line both sides of the approach path, letting you soak in the atmosphere of Mount Yoshino, famous as a cherry blossom destination, as you stroll. Because of its elevation, Mount Yoshino stays cooler than the foothills even in summer, and mornings are an especially comfortable time to walk. It's a good idea to soak in the history of this place as a family before the river play in the afternoon.

Tips

Entry to view inside Zao-do Hall requires a fee, and the content of special viewings can vary by season, so check the official website for the day's viewing information before heading out. The approach path has continuous slopes and stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Parking on Mount Yoshino is paid in some areas, and driving up to the top can get crowded on summer weekends, so bring drinks with you when you set out.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Mornings are the most comfortable, with fewer crowds and less direct sun
