About this spot

This scenic spot opens up where the Yoshino River makes a large bend, and it's a national historic site said to have been the location of the ancient Yoshino Palace. Massive boulders, carved smooth by the water over long ages, are scattered here, and the water flowing between them holds a deep blue-green hue — the power of this naturally sculpted landscape is overwhelming. The spot is also mentioned in the Manyoshu poetry anthology, and reading the information boards as you walk lets even children sense that 'people came here long ago too.' The riverside path is short, making it just the right size for a stop before the afternoon's river play. It's also close to the campground, so there's no burden of extra travel.

Tips

The pools are deeper and the current faster than they appear, so treat this as a spot for viewing the scenery only — do not enter the water. The rocks become slippery when wet, so keep hold of your children's hands. There's little shade, so don't forget a hat and drinks. Parking space is limited, so it's best to keep your visit short rather than lingering.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. A convenient distance for a short stop before river play
