'Shakunage no Mori River Park (Summer Yamame Festival)' is a regular summer event held at the river park in Shakunage no Mori, Mimata Town, Kitamorokata District, Miyazaki Prefecture. In 2026, its 24th edition runs from Saturday, July 18 through Monday, August 31, from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:00), held daily except in severe weather such as typhoons or heavy rain. In the river-play area set up along the Okimizu River inside Shakunage no Mori, known as one of Japan's largest azalea/rhododendron parks, programs include yamame fishing, catching yamame barehanded, an exciting river-swimming session with a safety class, a fish-catching class, and a river nature observation session. It's a managed area equipped with a reception desk and a restaurant, with life jackets available for rent and a safety class taught by 'Rescue 3,' specialists in water rescue, so even first-time river play can proceed smoothly and safely.

Tips

A deposit of 500 yen per visitor (ages 3 and up) is required, which is applied toward the cost of fishing, catching-by-hand, and meals. Programs such as yamame fishing and catching-by-hand experiences cost 1,100 to 1,500 yen. Parking is free. Last entry is at 16:00, so arrive by then. Fish caught by hand can be cooked on the spot, making it easy to plan on having lunch there. Wear clothes you don't mind getting wet, and bring a change of clothes and a towel for each person. The event is canceled in severe weather, so check the day's forecast before setting out.
