About this spot

A shrine standing on the slopes of Mt. Oyama, known as the destination of the 'Oyama pilgrimage' (大山詣り) that became hugely popular among common people in the Edo period. The autumn leaves are typically at their best from mid to late November. Japanese maples along the approach and around the shrine buildings turn into a gradient of red, orange, and yellow, and the shrine grounds offer sweeping views stretching from the Sagami Plain to Sagami Bay. Nighttime light-ups during the autumn foliage season were held, per 2025 records, from November 21 to 30 (shared with Oyama-dera Temple (大山寺)), running from sunset to 19:00 on weekdays and sunset to 20:00 on weekends and holidays; the Oyama Cable Car also extended its evening operating hours during that period (the 2026 schedule has not yet been announced). A shukubo (temple lodging) stamp-and-quiz rally and a market along the old approach (旧参道マルシェ) featuring food trucks and local shops have also been held during the same period in the past.
