About this spot

A valley along the Tenen Hiking Course (天園ハイキングコース), known as one of Kamakura's finest spots for autumn leaves. The best viewing period is typically late November through mid-December. The entire valley is covered in maple trees, and the sight of fallen ginkgo leaves turning the mountain path yellow in late autumn is beloved as 'the autumn leaves of Shishimai.' It's about a 40-minute walk from the Daitonomiya bus stop, following the Nikaido River. The mountain path is unpaved and can be muddy along the stream, so comfortable walking shoes are essential, and strollers cannot enter. The tourist association advises caution throughout the course for slippery spots and steep ups and downs, and notes that bicycles are not permitted.

Tips

Since it gets dark early in late autumn, plan to leave the valley by around 3 p.m. and head back while it's still light. The ground is especially muddy the day after rain. This course is best suited for children who can walk confidently.

Best time to visit
