About this spot

A prefectural park built on the former villa grounds of the Mitsui family, the autumn leaves are typically at their best from late November to early December. About 540 maple trees have been planted in the former Mitsui Villa area, with many concentrated around Fudo Pond, where the reflection of the foliage on the water's surface is the top highlight. Family-friendly sights are scattered throughout, including the Joyama-an tea house, a maple grove, and an observation deck overlooking Sagami Bay. Admission is free in both the former Mitsui Villa area and the former Yoshida Shigeru Residence area. There is no time limit in the former Mitsui Villa area, but since it has no lighting, daytime visits are recommended; the former Yoshida Shigeru Residence area is open 9:00 AM-5:00 PM (last entry 4:45 PM). In past years, an illumination lighting up around 150 trees around Fudo Pond (4:30 PM-8:00 PM, free) has been held in late November - in 2025 it ran November 28-30, with weekend performances of children's festival music and traditional gagaku and koto music (details for 2026 have not yet been announced - please check the official website).

Tips

Admission is free and parking is available. There are many slopes and stairs within the park, so a baby carrier is easier to manage than a stroller. Touring the interior of the former Yoshida Shigeru Residence requires a separate fee, so check the official website if you plan to visit.

Best time to visit

Afternoon, when the light is low and slanting. On illumination days, it's also worth staying until the evening lighting begins.
