Oyama Afuri Shrine (大山阿夫利神社)
Flow of the course
About this spot
Located just steps from Afuri Jinja Station (阿夫利神社駅), the terminus of the cable car, this shrine sits at an elevation of about 700m on the slopes of Mt. Oyama (大山). It is a historic shrine that thrived during the Edo period with pilgrims making 《Oyama Mairi》(大山詣り) visits, and at the underground entrance to the right of the main hall you can draw the sacred spring water known as 《Oyama Meisui》(大山名水). From the shrine grounds you can see all the way toward Sagami Bay (相模湾), and as sunset approaches you can enjoy watching the lights gradually come on in the city below.
Tips
It gets much colder up on the mountain than on flat ground, so it is a good idea to keep your winter layers on even while visiting the shrine. Seasonal goshuin (御朱印, shrine stamps) are also available.
Best time to visit
Evening. It is recommended to finish your visit before sunset and then wait on the shrine grounds for the evening view.
