Completed in 1934 (Showa 9), the main building of Yokohama Customs House (横浜税関) is affectionately known as Queen's Tower (クイーンの塔), one of the Three Towers of Yokohama (横浜三塔). It is characterized by an emerald green, Islamic-mosque-style dome. The exterior illumination can be viewed from outside year-round, free of charge. The exhibition room inside, Queen's Hiroba (クイーンのひろば), is open from 10:00 to 16:00 with free admission, and is closed during the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3) and on the customs house's regular closing days. Since it closes in the evening, viewing at night is limited to the exterior. Arrive before sunset to enjoy the transition from the evening glow to the night view.

Tips

If you also want to see the exhibition room, Queen's Hiroba (クイーンのひろば), plan to stop by before 16:00. A classic composition is looking up at the dome from the sidewalk on Kaigan Dori (海岸通り). Traffic is busy at night, so please stay on the sidewalk even while taking photos.

Best time to visit

The magic hour just after sunset. The green of the dome stands out beautifully while the sky still holds a hint of blue.
